President Donald Trump is calling for an overhaul of the U.S. debt to ease pressure on the federal government, saying in a speech Thursday that he has to act to prevent the government from spending more than it takes in.
Trump was speaking at a fundraiser for Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, in a room filled with a crowd of about 150 supporters.
Trump is the first sitting president to take part in the event.
He has repeatedly called for a plan to help the American people as they prepare for the election.
